In the week before
Open your appointment confirmation and check the date, time, location and the exam you are taking. Confirm the exam language you selected; the written exams are offered in English, Spanish and Vietnamese, with Korean and Simplified Chinese also available, so verify that your appointment matches your choice. Download or re-read the current PSI bulletin and the Board's exam page rather than relying on what a friend remembers from an earlier test.
ID and name matching
The April 2026 PSI bulletin requires a valid, unexpired government-issued photo ID, with a name identical to the name on the Board's record. Compare the ID in your wallet against your registration a few days early so there is time to resolve a mismatch through the official channels. If you need testing accommodations, check the bulletin and the Board's page for how to ask; this checklist cannot say what will be approved.
Arrival planning
The bulletin says to arrive at least 30 minutes before your appointment. Work backward: find the route and parking, allow for traffic, and set a leave-by time with a buffer. Do not assume what you can bring in or how breaks work; look for those rules in the bulletin and your confirmation. Unauthorized exam materials are prohibited, so keep study notes out of reach of the testing area.
The computer tutorial
A tutorial comes before the exam on the computer. Use it to learn how to move between questions, mark one for review and read the screen, since these controls are what you will use for the entire exam. Take it seriously even when you feel ready.
Pacing strategy
Every written exam has scored questions plus a smaller group of pretest questions that are unscored, and the exam does not tell you which are which. Do not try to guess. Answer each question as if it counts. As a rough guide, the cosmetology exam's 110 questions in 120 minutes work out to about 65 seconds each. Esthetician averages about 64 seconds, Barber about 76, and Manicurist about 83. Use your own trade’s format when practicing. Make a first pass, answering what you can and flagging what you cannot, and then come back to the flagged items with the time that remains.
After the exam
Use the official results report as the basis for any review. Map each area it reports to the Board's content outline and note where you were weaker. Rest first, then plan study. Retake timing, fees and eligibility come from the Board and PSI, not from this article, so check their pages before scheduling.
Study checklist
- Confirmation matches the exam and language you want.
- ID is valid, unexpired and matches the Board record name.
- Leave-by time is set for arrival at least 30 minutes early.
- Study notes and unauthorized materials stay out of the testing area.
- Official results review is planned before any retake.
Original worked example · not an official exam question
Two days before the exam you notice the middle name on your ID is missing from your registration. What should you do?
Answer: Contact the Board or PSI through the channels in your confirmation right away, tell them what you see, and ask what they need from you. Do not wait for exam day.
Reasoning: The bulletin requires the ID name to be identical to the Board's record. Contact the official channels early to ask how to resolve the mismatch; this guide cannot promise a correction or admission by the appointment date.
